I-DEP Launches Internet Deposition Service

Jim Moran

It seems that every day someone is finding a new and creative use of the Internet to make life easier at home and more profitable in the workplace. Many enterprising people have come up with all sorts of clever uses. Carefully consider what Chicago-based I-DEP L.L.C. is doing!

This firm has recently launched a new product and service that permits attorneys to take real-time depositions online from one or more remote locations via the Internet. Any authorized person from any remote location, be it an office, from the comfort of home, in transit, or even while on vacation can logon with a password and participate in this important aspect of the litigation discovery process!

The I-DEP service was unveiled at the American Bar Association's Techshow 2000 held recently in Chicago and it drew quite a bit of attention. A slick running video presentation, a newspaper write-up of the service posted for all to see, and the PR firm of Serafin & Associates brought the message home that the Internet can revolutionize the way attorneys gather evidence during the discovery stage of litigation.

I-DEP screen display provides audio, video, and instant messaging.

I-DEP works something like this. While live lead attorney questioning takes place and a court reporter enters deposition data, attorneys located elsewhere, anywhere in America and around the world with a secured Internet connection, can fully participate with their onsite colleague with minimum distractions. The I-DEP screen features live audio, video, and real-time messaging that permits attorneys to watch and listen to deponents, view and review the court reporter's entries, communicate with their colleagues, and ask questions themselves via two-way audio. Attorneys located at remote locations can provide instant feedback as to the direction the deposition is taking and provide direct input to change the direction it will take. Depositions are then saved, stored, and made available for online reviewing and court use.

This innovative adaptation of existing technology can save time, effort, and money as the legal process begins. Here are some of the immediate advantages this unique service can provide:

  • Any room or office can become an I-DEP center.
  • Attorneys don't need to be present to participate.
  • Attorneys continue normal activities at work and at home.
  • Attorneys can join in as they are needed.
  • Attorneys can review the entire deposition online.
  • Behind-the-scenes discussions can take place.
  • Research can be conducted during the deposition.
  • It provides timely gathering of testimony and evidence.
  • It saves on travel, lodging, and other expenses.

Does I-DEP work? Sure it does! It was put to the test during its first live deposition on March 27, 2000, between Las Vegas and Chicago. As Chicago attorneys watched and listened to someone being deposed in Las Vegas, they communicated privately with their co-counsel who was onsite in Las Vegas, and they submitted their own suggestions to their co-counsel with a minimum of distractions!

I-DEP L.L.C., founded by Jay Jackson and Julie Furer, is clearly on to something big here. They have taken existing technology and packaged it into a product and service that can speed up the legal process and perhaps have a dramatic impact upon the outcome of court cases nationwide. They must be commended for introducing this use of technology to the legal profession. It's a bold step that someone had to take. We wish them much success!
