Iowa's First I-DEPSM Internet Deposition Completed
Ottumwa Attorney Remotely Deposes Witness in Dallas, Texas
(Aug. 20, 2001, DES MOINES and OTTUMWA, Iowa) -- An Ottumwa attorney is the
first legal professional in Iowa to use a new Internet deposition service provided by
Chicago-based I-DEP. Through the breakthrough service, Iowa attorneys can now attend,
monitor or even take a deposition remotely from any location with only a personal
computer and an Internet connection.
"We're excited that our firm was the first in Iowa to take advantage of this kind of
leading-edge legal technology," said Kenneth A. Duker of Johnson, Hester, Walter &
Breckenridge LLP. "I-DEP all but eliminates the hassles of scheduling and traveling -
saving us and our clients time and money. I was actually able to effectively examine two
witnesses in Dallas, Texas, right from my office in Ottumwa."
I-DEP provides live video, two-way audio, realtime court reporter transcript and private
messaging to any Internet-enabled computer. Internet depositions can help Iowa law firms
and their clients save thousands of dollars in travel costs and avoid scheduling conflicts
by handling litigation procedures online, with all or some parties participating remotely.
This constant collaboration with colleagues, experts or clients at multiple locations - as
well as the discreet "instant chat" feature - offers not only competitive, but tactical
advantages for Iowa attorneys.
No special hardware or software is required to participate in an I-DEP Internet deposition.
Law firms simply call I-DEP or an I-DEP-certified court reporting firm such as Des
Moines-based Huney Vaughn Court Reporters Ltd., which takes care of all the technical
details - including setup of the I-DEP field kit at the deposition site.
"Our attorneys are happy because it saves them time, their clients are happy because it
saves them money - it's a favorable situation any way you look at it," said George
Huney, co-owner of Huney Vaughn Reporters.
"BusinessWeek magazine has suggested that within five years, as many as half of all
depositions will be conducted electronically," added co-owner Mervin Vaughn. "We're
proud to be an early provider of Internet depositions and are encouraging all of our clients
to consider the many ways this technology can make their lives easier."
